September 18, 2012 – Oracle announced a proposed deal for cloud talent location and management vendor SelectMinds, just days after further detail was presented with the future of its big-ticket HCM buy Taleo.

SelectMinds provides cloud-based applications for talent officers to scour and connect to candidates through social media channels, and also provides applications for enterprise alumni management. The vendor was founded in 2000 and is based in New York City.

Oracle EVP of Development Thomas Kurian said in a release on the proposed deal that SelectMinds’ applications would work in particular with Oracle’s Talent Management Cloud to bring a new angle with social and mobile capabilities in enterprise efforts to pin down recruits.

Oracle stated that SelectMinds products are already integrated with its cloud recruiting, performance management and HCM offerings. Training from SelectMinds would be offered under Oracle University. Oracle stated in a release on the deal that SelectMinds employees would join Oracle’s cloud and talent management teams.

Further financial details were not disclosed. Oracle expects it to close sometime in the second half of 2012.

Major vendors have not been shy about buying into the talent management space in the past year, with IBM proposing $1.3 billion for Kenexa in August and SAP’s $3.4 billion payout for SuccessFactors in December. In February, Oracle bid $1.9 billion for Taleo, which led a presentation on the human capital management and HR tech and integration plans at its Taleo World conference last week in Chicago. Reflecting on plans presented last week at a Taleo conference, Ventana Research CEO Mark A. Smith noted that Oracle was in a position that it should look to invest more in capabilities that empower HR officials to access data, like SaaS and workforce management software.
