BACKGROUND: OAG Worldwide is a global content management company specializing in travel and transport and is best known for its airline schedule databases which contain flight details for more than 1,000 airlines and more than 3,000 airports. Our products are used by business and individual consumers and accessed via a broad range of mediums (Internet, CD, mobile, PDAs and print). Our business is all about collecting, massaging and presenting large volumes of data. We receive data from a vast majority of airlines operating flights worldwide. The data, received in a variety of formats and with varying levels of consistency, needs to be cleansed, validated, transformed, stored and redistributed.

PLATFORMS: DB2 running on AIX.

PROBLEM SOLVED: To streamline our operations and to better manage our ability to get new products to market quicker and with greater frequency, we recently launched a migration program to move all applications off mainframes to a DB2 RDBMS running on IBM/AIX platforms. Because our business cannot suffer any interruptions in service, we needed to figure out how to keep our applications running during the migration process and needed a tool that would help us to easily migrate our data. Because of the mammoth amounts of data and data formats that we deal with, as well as our need to update huge databases as often as 10 times per second, we realized that using a proprietary solution requiring custom script development and maintenance would not be a viable option. We needed a sophisticated ETL product that could handle both the complexity and volume of our data processes. With Sunopsis, we had tremendous success and are now able to better meet our customers' needs.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Sunopsis was clearly the best product to do the job - mainly due to the fact that it relies on the RDBMS engine instead of a proprietary engine to transform and process data. Upon first use of the product, we were impressed at how easily and quickly Sunopsis was able to deal with complex transformation challenges and with the product's elegance, simplicity and intuitiveness. Sunopsis is now a key element of our new information infrastructure. As an enterprise data integration platform, Sunopsis is able to complete in minutes complex tasks that used to take days. For example, our Geography system requires 128 separate complex data interfaces to be executed. Sunopsis is able to entirely automate this process and provide results in less than four minutes. In another case, we had an application that contained all fight schedule data and consisted of more than 9 million source records. Sunopsis was able to load and parse the 9 million source records to create 611,000 flight records in approximately three minutes. With Sunopsis, we are now able to dramatically reduce our development time and costs and are better able to respond to our customers' changing needs.

STRENGTHS: Sunopsis was by far the best tool to address our high-volume, highly complex transformation needs, within our budgetary constraints. Sunopsis is standards-based, leverages the power of our existing databases, does not utilize a proprietary engine and does not require the purchase of additional hardware.

WEAKNESSES: The product's documentation could be better. A few times we needed to rely upon the support team to guide us through specific activities.

SELECTION CRITERIA: We looked at several ETL products on the market hoping to find a tool that would be easy enough to understand and use, yet would allow us to meet our tight time frame and extremely complex data management needs. We were looking for a technology that would become the foundation for all integration efforts. Reliability, stability, adaptability and usability were key. Sunopsis was the logical choice.

DELIVERABLES: With Sunopsis, we were able to smoothly migrate our key applications to our new IT environment. We are now better able to manage our data integration needs while reducing costs and increasing our ability to quickly respond to market changes and the needs of our customers.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Sunopsis provides excellent support services. Sunopsis responds expertly to all OAG queries, often immediately and always within an hour.

DOCUMENTATION: The documentation was adequate.
