There's a good chance that many of you are not familiar with the DAMA Presidents Council Liaison position. DAMA President Michael Brackett initiated the position when he appointed Rita Wheeler (Portland Chapter President) as the Presidents Council Liaison to the DAMA International Board in 2000. Rita rallied the chapter presidents and created better communications between the chapters and the DAMA International Board.

In 2001, Brackett appointed me (Phoenix Chapter President) to the position. I can assure you that rallying the presidents is no easy task. The diversity of the chapters and the frequent replacement of chapter officers keeps the challenge alive. The Presidents Council Liaison position itself, is also evolving fairly rapidly.

The status of the Presidents Council Liaison position was revisited at the DAMA International Board meeting in January. The position was redesigned to make the Presidents Council Liaison an ex officio member of the DAMA International Board. This means that each year the chapter presidents will elect one of their own to be their liaison to the DAMA International Board. The President of DAMA International will no longer make an appointment to fill the position. As with the past position, the elected Presidents Council Liaison will attend the DAMA International Board meetings as a representative of the chapter presidents.

This is an exciting change for a forward-thinking professional organization. There are many of needs and services that can be fulfilled by actively carrying the voice from all the chapter presidents to the DAMA International Board. Our goal is to make this the "premier organization for data management professionals."

To help achieve this goal, I hope that all chapter presidents actively participate by responding to inquiries for input and attending the Presidents Council meeting on April 28th, the Sunday preceding the 14th Annual DAMA International Symposium in San Antonio, Texas. This is going to be an exciting meeting, and I hope to see all the chapter presidents there.
