Noetix Unlocks Data for Telex Corporation

REVIEWER: Scott Renneke, independent consultant for Integrated Technology Services, Inc.

BACKGROUND: Telex is a global leader in marketing, designing and manufacturing audio, wireless and multimedia communications products.

PLATFORMS: Windows NT for NQS/NWQ and Solaris 2.6 for Oracle7.3.4.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Telex purchased NoetixViews in 1997 and Noetix Web Query in 1999 to simplify their reporting against Oracle applications. Telex wanted a simple, cost-effective solution they could easily roll out to their end users, with minimal interruptions to daily business processes. Noetix' solution enabled Telex end users to do their sales and plant reporting with point-and-click simplicity and without requiring massive IT involvement. The Noetix implementation saved consulting hours. It didn't negatively impact production schedules, nor did it incur expensive licensing costs. Additionally, the implementation provided Telex with an immediate return on investment.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: As a business intelligence consultant for Telex, I'm responsible for administration and query development of our Oracle applications. Users found their existing query tool, Oracle Discoverer, cumbersome to use and lacking in flexibility for nontechnical users' needs. NoetixViews provided a map of our customized Oracle applications data, shielding my users from the complexity of underlying data structures. Noetix Web Query's Web-based reporting capability delivered business information quickly and simply in a format my users could clearly understand. Additionally, Noetix Web Query's ability to export data directly to Microsoft Excel for further detailed analysis allowed users to query their information using familiar tools. Translating data into common business terms offered Telex users a relevant business perspective and significantly reduced the "hassle-factor."

STRENGTHS: Both NoetixViews and Noetix Web Query are easy and fast to deploy and don't require a major investment in training resources or specialized consulting services. Noetix technology gives my users a better understanding of their data, allowing them to independently answer their own common business questions. The simplicity and autonomy Noetix solution affords my users, in addition to a very reasonable price tag, are the biggest strengths of the products.

WEAKNESSES: Noetix Web Query is a fairly young product; and as it matures, I'd like to see additional integration with Oracle's applications which would help even further reduce the maintenance requirements. I'd also like to see more complete documentation for the product.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Telex was already familiar with NoetixViews when I came on board. I was so impressed that I actually implemented it at an additional site. After careful research, I recommended Noetix Web Query to Telex upper management. Based on the products' seamless integration, ease of rollout, ability to empower end users, lack of licensing fees against Oracle applications and the reasonable cost, I encountered no opposition to my recommendation.

DELIVERABLES: Users are able to develop and maintain routine sales and plant reports. Users refresh their reports directly from Excel and use the pivot tables to drill for further detail and add desired customizations to their reports. Because of Noetix Web Query's integration with Excel, one query can meet the needs of many users.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Noetix provided excellent support for Telex, an early adopter. Noetix provided me with direct access to the senior engineer during the beta implementation of the product.

DOCUMENTATION: Noetix offered comprehensive onsite training during the product implementation, although the user documentation was light and could be improved.
