BACKGROUND: Deseret Power, a generation and transmission cooperative, is dedicated to providing reliable, economical electrical services to its 50,000 customers in a manner that is both consistent with sound business principles and socially and environmentally responsible. That dedication has attracted some of the biggest names in American industry, including Chevron, El Paso and Pennzoil. Deseret Power is based in South Jordan, Utah, and employs more than 250 people.
PLATFORMS: Oracle E-Business Suite version 11i.
PROBLEM SOLVED: With help from an outside consulting firm, Deseret Power's four-person IT team implemented Oracle E-Business Suite version 11i within a five-month period that ended in May 2005. Shortly after moving to Oracle, the team discovered that their end users were having a challenging time obtaining the basic and custom reports they wanted from the Oracle database. Inevitably, the IT team ended up spending valuable time simply writing reports requested by the users within the company, and most of the team became dedicated to creating these reports on a full-time basis. Most challenging was preparing the data: finding the data and preparing it for the report. Oftentimes, the team did not know where to go within Oracle to even obtain data the users had requested. They were truly feeling the pain of constantly trying to obtain what the end users needed. After six months of working to create reports on their own, the Deseret IT team decided they needed a reporting tool that could provide a solution beyond what Oracle Discover and SQL offered them. They selected Noetix as their solution and purchased the full suite of products including NoetixViews and the Noetix Platform.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: The Noetix Technology Solution significantly reduces the time and effort necessary to get operational information into the hands of decision-makers fast. When real-time data is essential for ad hoc reporting, Noetix provides the technology and tools that quickly turn complexity into simplified data access, providing business users with greater insight and the ability to immediately answer their own business questions. With Noetix, the Deseret IT team had immediate access to hundreds of business views, which greatly simplified their ability to create reports and also saved them the manual mapping effort normally required. In addition, the team is teaching the end users to create their own reports using Noetix and estimates that a quarter of the end users now rarely need IT support. Deseret's end users now access information to build their own reports in order to better run the business. For example, many reports are developed to create a picture of the company's inventory: numbers of items available, where items are located within the warehouse, the amount of time each item has been there, etc. Within the human resources department, reports are developed to provide intelligence on payroll and how employees are using benefits. In the financial department, employees are able to go from a general ledger summary report and drill down into details of each line item.
STRENGTHS: Now that the users can go out and develop their own reports, they're freeing the IT team up to do other things. Even when IT does encounter a user that's not well versed in Noetix, they can use the solution to more quickly build a report for them than they ever could before. IT can also easily find a view that Noetix has already developed, which can be customized and modified enough to satisfy their needs.
WEAKNESSES: Noetix needs functionality to compete with Discoverer's crosstab queries.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Noetix looked like a great fit because they had already done the legwork of creating the views. The beauty of Noetix is that a person can do a quick ad hoc query and then convert it to an Excel spreadsheet complete with drill down.
DELIVERABLES: Deseret Power's IT team estimates that Noetix saves them a total of 10 hours per day on report writing. They expect to save even more time as user-base adoption of Noetix continues.
VENDOR SUPPORT: Noetix sent a consultant to help the Deseret IT team implement the solution. Following this, Noetix worked with Deseret Power to conduct a training class for all of the users in the company. The solution is so easy to use that this was all that was needed to get the users working with the product.
DOCUMENTATION: The documentation was complete and easy to understand.
