Health information exchange vendor Healthix, which has served New York City and Long Island healthcare organizations for eight years, is augmenting its data analytics services to include predictive analytics using a technology platform from HBI Solutions.
Over the years, providers in the region have sent visit data to the HIE that Healthix manages to compile a consolidated record of patients. Its database now includes information on more than 16 million patients, including some who don’t live in the region but received treatment while there.
Healthix can alert providers when a patient is admitted or readmitted to the hospital, or is admitted to the emergency department or returns to ED. The underlying Healthix HIE platform, from InterSystems, includes the vendor’s Health Insight analytics to assess current conditions of patients in a healthcare organization’s patient population, and it sends alerts to providers, such as when test results are available.
Tom Check Now, by adding HBI Solutions on top of the existing analytics platform, Healthix can look at patient medical histories to predict the risk of future events and conditions, says Tom Check, its president and CEO. “HealthInsight lets us take action based on clinical data being received, and HBI applies algorithms to predict potential future risk.”
Healthix has piloted HBI over a six-month period—a pilot program with the Institute for Community Living (ICL), which offers behavioral/medical homes that integrate primary and behavioral care, was completed in March. This month, updated data has been put into production mode, and HBI is expected to be live in May, Check says.
Much of analytics traditionally has focused on use of claims data; Healthix receives such data from six regional insurers, says Todd Rogow, senior vice president and CIO. That data can be used to let a physician know that a patient has diabetes or another condition. Data flowing from insurers and providers through the HIE also is used to update risk scores, which are run every morning and provide almost a real-time opportunity for caregivers to be more proactive with patient treatment.
But with its focus on behavioral health and treating complex patients, ICL as the pilot site opened new avenues for collecting and analyzing data, Rogow notes. It brought social and behavioral aspects to the data with information on how patients live—if they have a job and a home, have experienced domestic or community violence, or have experienced other trauma, such as the death of a parent.
Healthix already was taking in to account income levels, where patients reside and educational levels via data from HBI Solutions, which when combined with behavioral and social data, can paint a better picture of patients and their needs.
Asked what made HBI stand out among other analytics vendors, Healthix CEO Check cites the thoroughness of its predictive risk stratification capability, experience working with very large data sources, and a refined presentation of results that makes it easy for an organization to find answers.
