PLATFORMS: Navmed stores data on an HP 3000 server using MPE 5.5 with Amisys release 9.0. Navmed users work on PCs with Windows 3.x, Windows 95 and Windows NT in a Novell 4.1 network.
BACKGROUND: Navmed, based in Fresno, California, is a managed care administration services organization for health care providers, Independent Physicians' Associations (IPAs) and Physicians' Services Organizations (PSOs) providing system information and support for 28 hospitals, six IPAs and numerous clinics and pharmacies.
PROBLEM SOLVED: Navmed managers began looking for a business intelligence system to replace the weekly, manual collation of paper reports, often as difficult to read and interpret as they were to prepare. We also have a variety of data sources and database types, several legacies, plus a new data warehouse project in the works. We wanted tools that would let us trend our historical data, see our current data and would move with us into our data warehousing project. Most importantly, we needed to provide the tools and information to raise health care quality and keep costs down. Speedware Media provides those tools with access to multidimensional data that allows us to slice and dice the data in a variety of ways. It also can access our relational database and give us room to grow. This solution helps our Information Services department provide timely, beneficial, easy-to-use information to our total user community.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Navmed's senior managers use Speedware Media to improve the quality of the information gathered by information services. Media gives the managers fast, efficient access to critical health care indicators.
STRENGTHS: Media lets non- technical users create graphical briefing boards that present the current values of a number of selected, numerical indicators extracted from corporate databases. These indicators can be analyzed comparatively, geographically or chronologically. When trends or unexpected situations are highlighted by Media's analysis, a drill-down feature helps users uncover the reason. The multiple subject areas represented on a briefing board can be changed as the scope or focus of a project changes. For health care providers, the rapid and accurate analysis of patient-care and financial indicators is a key part of providing the best possible care in today's environment of skyrocketing costs. In just a few weeks, Navmed had an operational model (not just a prototype) up and running.
WEAKNESSES: Media's embedded charting and graphing package is rather limited. However, a new graphing package is being implemented, which will offer a wider variety of easy-to-use graphing and charting capabilities.
SELECTION CRITERIA: After a competitive evaluation, Media was chosen for its cost-effectiveness, ease of use and speed of development. Media is the most cost-effective choice, not only for its low license price but also because it does not require a lot of staff training nor specialists for maintenance.
DELIVERABLES: Media allows managers to see at a glance a range of critical factors including bed occupancy, reasons for admissions, average length of stay, trends in admissions and rates of referral to specialists by primary-care physicians that can help improve the quality of services, along with saving money by insuring that the appropriate care is provided at the appropriate setting. What's less obvious, but just as important, is how Media helps us spot underutilization of services.
VENDOR SUPPORT: Support from Speedware has been fantastic; we've had no complaints about service and no difficulty reaching the correct Speedware support staff.
DOCUMENTATION: The vendor-supplied documentation covered the base product very thoroughly. We also had a good knowledge-transfer session after completion of the project. Our people are well able to maintain their briefing boards and to build new ones.
