PLATFORMS: PLATINUM Repository/MVS supports MVS, OS/2, Windows, Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems. NationsBank is running Repository/MVS on a mainframe connected to PLATINUM Repository/Director on the bank's LAN servers running DB2 for OS/390 database engines.

BACKGROUND: NationsBank announced a merger with BankAmerica in April 1998, creating a global financial powerhouse. Prior to the merger, NationsBank was the third largest U.S. bank, with $264 billion in total assets.

PROBLEM SOLVED: NationsBank was faced with the critical challenge of fulfilling many types of reporting demands for its enormous customer base. In order to execute business decisions effectively and provide industry-leading customer service, the bank's extensive heterogeneous computing environment required consistent, accurate and timely data. Without the means to standardize the variety of databases created by end users on packaged applications located throughout the company, divisional managers were faced with redundant, inaccurate and inconsistent reports that wasted time, money and resources.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: PLATINUM Repository/MVS centrally manages meta data from various applications and systems in our heterogeneous environment. PLATINUM Repository/MVS is a mainframe-based repository combined with an easy-to-use set of scanning and population tools. The product has helped NationsBank to facilitate enterprise-wide information sharing, application development and data quality maintenance. Our IT professionals can now effectively reconcile and manage a wealth of disparate corporate data by integrating business information and providing easy access to ever-increasing amounts of data. As a result, we have enhanced business and trend analysis and performance by dramatically reducing network traffic and system overloads.

STRENGTHS: The most important PLATINUM Repository/MVS features for NationsBank include: its impact analysis facility, which provides us with unlimited navigation of the system definitions to reveal the total impact of any change throughout the organization; the naming standards, which enable us to virtually eliminate data redundancies and increase data sharing, making the application development process more efficient and effective; and the Repository-to-CASE interface, which will enable us to manage multiple CASE workstations from the Repository, providing a central point of control and storage along with a road map of all data objects.

WEAKNESSES: PLATINUM Repository/MVS includes a fair amount of customization to meet end-user requirements. Also, because user demand is high, PLATINUM tends to release new versions of the Repository before all issues are completely resolved.

SELECTION CRITERIA: PLATINUM Repository/MVS was selected because it would support our large heterogeneous environment at an enterprise level and provide us with advanced features not offered by other repository solution vendors. Additionally, our selection committee favored PLATINUM Repository because it is based on an open architecture and not on proprietary databases.

DELIVERABLES: Several key criteria have been used to measure the success of the PLATINUM Repository/MVS solution: reduction of redundant data, easy access to and accurate viewing of data, reduction in research time and cost of maintaining meta data.

VENDOR SUPPORT: We feel that our issues are a priority to PLATINUM and that they are resolved in a timely manner. PLATINUM dedicates a support representative to each Repository implementation project. Additionally, PLATINUM is extremely focused and responsive to user feedback through its PLATINUM Repository Users Group.

DOCUMENTATION: PLATINUM's documentation assumes that users are familiar with earlier versions of the product.
