BACKGROUND: Motorists Insurance Company provides personal and commercial property and casualty insurance to customers across five states. The company is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.

PLATFORMS: IBM mainframe, UNIX and Windows NT platforms.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Motorists Insurance Company sought to consolidate four database systems into one central client database for marketing and billing purposes. Through the consolidation of their 500,000 client records, Motorists wanted to reduce billing costs, as well as identify customers that hold more than one policy and those that live within the same household. Before implementing NADIS, Motorists had separate name and address information for each policy and customer.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Motorists used NADIS to verify name and address data and remove duplicates during its mass record consolidation. Using the NADIS ScrubMaster module, Motorists converted name and address data from the company's four databases into a common format. Subsequently, NADIS performed data scrubbing, matching and consolidation. Motorists uses the NADIS SearchMaster module to identify household relationships among policy holders. The SearchMaster module analyzes name and address data to reliably identify these relationships.

STRENGTHS: The superior accuracy of NADIS is one its greatest strengths. Motorists found that NADIS had a low rejection rate. After processing 500,000 name and address records for the company, NADIS only rejected 500. In addition, Motorists found the system was easy to use after minimal training.

WEAKNESSES: One weakness of NADIS for Motorists was its inability to process nicknames. Because NADIS does not recognize nicknames, these records have to be entered manually. However, Group 1 responded to this suggestion, and nickname processing is included in NADIS 6.0.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Motorists chose NADIS over other data integrity products because Group 1 incorporated Motorists' data into a demo and could answer specific questions that related to the company. NADIS was the only product that was easy to learn and use.

DELIVERABLES: NADIS delivers a reliable database in a consolidated format filled with accurate information. NADIS also supplies users with error and matching reports. In addition, the fact that NADIS can match relationships across files provided Motorists with a new way to view customers.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Group 1 provided individualized support. During NADIS training, Group 1 used our data to help get the system up and running even faster. The Group 1 staff was able to provide answers to all of our questions.

DOCUMENTATION: The NADIS documentation was easy to read and understand. It provided the backup support necessary to put our project into operation. The user's guide provides information on installation, training and references.
