My organization has a huge reporting requirement based on data taken from mainframe reports on a daily basis (50 MB). It is not cost-effective to generate a customized report for every reporting requirement, so we want to build a generic reporting tool. While we build the generic reporting tool, I am aware that we should keep the principle of data warehousing in mind. For the generic reporting tool, I need the facility of saving calculated data in the database. No generic existing reporting tool in the market is giving me this facility, so I have to develop the application in-house. Can you suggest some strategies/architectures/white papers that I should consult?
Douglas Hackney's Answer: I'm not sure what you mean by "calculated data." Most standard SQL generators will allow an answer to a query to be saved as a table in the database. You may be seeing more of a cultural limitation of DBAs resisting that feature than an inherent lack of capability in the tools.
