BACKGROUND: MIM Health Plans is a benefits management company that also provides both back-office claims processing and information analysis and delivery for their insurance company clients.
PLATFORMS: The platforms MIM utilizes with Mocha Blend 2.0 include UNIX and Windows NT on Compaq Alpha.
PROBLEM SOLVED: MIM needed to replace a failing, underutilized HTML-based query and reporting tool that we had marketed and deployed to our clients. This system provided clients with key drug utilization metrics and ad hoc analysis features that were limited by a SQL-based two-dimensional data storage architecture. For Web-based information delivery, MIM reviewed a number of tools. We selected Mocha Blend as our data access and display technology because we needed highly interactive and tailored "exact fit" user interaction, integrated summary (multidimensional) and transactional (relational) data within the same view, and integrated client-based security for relational data, multidimensional data and multidimensional (member) definitions. In addition, we liked the notion of quickly assembling prebuilt components to minimize custom development efforts. Painted Word teamed with MIM Health Plans to create the Clinical Management System (CMS). The Painted Word services organization worked closely with MIM to redefine and enhance data storage, application data views, and subsequent analysis and navigation options.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: With CMS we are now able to provide clients with the most advanced options for their pharmacy benefit analysis needs. Because Mocha Blend is extremely flexible, it provided us with the ability to present rich, custom information interfaces for our business-to-business solution. Because it is Web based, CMS provides customers with the most current data, instant access to all pharmaceutical benefits and drug costs, and multiple choices for transaction analysis. The CMS solution also provides our clients with key drug utilization metrics and ad hoc analysis features. Due to the open Mocha Blend architecture, CMS was easily integrated with a newly developed Oracle data warehouse and a set of Hyperion Essbase data marts. Most importantly, by plugging additional components into the Mocha Blend framework, CMS provides a platform for easy addition of expanded customer information services in the future. On all accounts Mocha Blend delivered it was the best tool on the market to meet our needs.
STRENGTHS: Mocha Blend integrated multidimensional and relational data within a single view. Our customers can now analyze summary data with the detailed transaction data available through dynamic queries. Customers choose from preformatted reports as well as ad hoc analysis utilizing dynamic grids and charts. Because Mocha Blend is an out-of-the-box, Web-enabled solution, we were able to create a new e-business solution quickly and effectively.
WEAKNESSES: Mocha Blend lacks the capability of sending reports to users via e-mail. E-mail support will be addressed in the next version.
SELECTION CRITERIA: MIM selected Painted Word and Mocha Blend for their proven ability to deliver a complete solution. Mocha Blend has the unique ability to deliver flexible, "exact-fit" desktop-style interaction without the need for desktop deployment, integrates into HTML or executes independently, offers a variety of visual options including spreadsheet, chart and tree displays, provides integrated relational and multidimensional data access in a single solution and enables client-based security. Capabilities that made Painted Word stand out from competitors included commitment to MIM and the success of CMS, knowledge of the Internet and analytical application development as well as an intimate understanding and experience with Essbase. In our view, Painted Word and Mocha Blend provided the fastest time to a meaningful solution, striking the sweet spot between out-of-the-box functionality and customizability.
DELIVERABLES: Currently, utilizing Mocha Blend for Internet-based distribution, our customers always have access to the most current and accurate information. Further, unlike paper-based reports, they can instantly access exactly the information they need and present it in the form desired.
VENDOR SUPPORT: Painted Word offers several support programs, including training, online support and consulting services. All programs include access to Painted Word's team of experienced support engineers.
DOCUMENTATION: Painted Word's documentation includes an online reference, several sets of tutorials, an administrator's guide and a set of sample templates.
