February 23, 2010 – Iron Mountain acquired Mimosa Systems, Inc. yesterday for approximately $112 million in cash.

The acquisition will take Iron Mountain’s cloud and content management capabilities to a new level, adding on-premises software for email, file and SharePoint archiving. Mimosa also brings Iron Mountain an on-premises archiving option to complement its existing cloud-based archives.

The deal significantly bolsters Iron Mountain’s archiving portfolio, says Brian Hill, senior analyst for Forrester Research.

While Mimosa’s on-premises message archiving software is likely to increase the number prospective buyers in a growing e-discovery market and those looking for a hybrid combination with cloud-based service, it will take some time for Iron Mountain to tie the technologies together, says Hill.

However, if Iron Mountain successfully incorporates Mimosa’s product set into its portfolio, the vendor will have the potential to address enterprise legal risk mitigation headaches, Hill says.

Iron Mountain’s partnership with Mimecast for software as a service-based message archiving should draw in prospective users with a preference for the increased security, privacy and legal protections of on-premises software, according to the analyst.
