PLATFORMS: Current hardware platform is Sun Sparc 20/Solaris. Also runs on HP-UX and IBM/AIX.

PROBLEM SOLVED: A financial services institution specializing in retail and institutional investments and brokerage services developed a global securities data warehouse. They wanted to consolidate their investment in numerous external market data feeds as well as integrate existing "systems of record" for their financial instrument data. Many of the market feeds and corporate databases supply equivalent information about the same financial instrument. The critical success factor was identifying the highest quality data source for each type of instrument. We identified and resolved issues with conflicting data and business rules implicit in data structures and uncovered problems with undocumented data that may never have been discovered until the system was ready to go into production.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Evoke's Migration Architect is a specialized data analysis tool that mines actual data to discover data quality issues, interdependencies between data elements and other inherent data-driven business rules. The information uncovered enables analysts to determine the true data types for each attribute and validate the primary key for each file. This is extremely useful to accurately map the source files to the consolidated target data structure. Migration Architect consolidates knowledge from multiple systems and rationalizes them into a single, unified, non-redundant model. It keeps track of all the findings and maintains a map of each source-to-target attribute relationship. Migration Architect also generates optimized DDL (data definition language) for any specific RDBMS that may be targeted. The DDL is complete with referential integrity instructions for the model generated.

STRENGTHS: The only way to reliably determine data quality is by analyzing the actual data (not just meta data) to gain a thorough understanding of the domain for each attribute, the functional dependencies existing in each file or table and the interdependencies between files for each source analyzed. This enables analysts to distinguish between data scrubbing issues that are simple mistakes and data quality issues that represent "data drift," a consistently incorrect usage of the data, which is much more significant. Other tools rely only on meta data, which is rarely kept up to date as changes and revisions are made to a system. Additionally, Migration Architect provides the ability to map source attributes to a target structure, which is used as a specification for conversion programmers who are responsible for loading the data into the warehouse.

WEAKNESSES: The Motif user interface is very powerful but not very intuitive to use. Evoke is currently working on a new Windows 95/NT client which will be included in the next release.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Migration Architect is the only tool on the market that I know of that provides the ability to perform detailed data analysis using actual data rather than just meta data. The Evoke professional staff provided knowledgeable and professional assistance to understand project requirements and drafted an initial project scope and plan.

DELIVERABLES: Migration Architect provides several intermediate deliverables in the form of detailed reports to assist in data analysis activities including data quality problems and issues that require research and resolution. By using the Migration Architect we were able to validate primary keys for each file and produce source-to-target data maps.

VENDOR SUPPORT: The Evoke staff was extremely responsive to our needs throughout our project. The professional staff provided invaluable assistance in data analysis.

DOCUMENTATION: The documentation was excellent.
