June 2, 2010 – SharePoint’s slow uptake as a Web publishing platform has created a space for midmarket vendors to thrive, turning previous analyst predictions on their heads.
Market research firm The Real Story Group released a report ranking 45 major, viable, midmarket Web content management system vendors that continue to thrive in current market conditions.
“The big takeaway here is that people have been thinking that SharePoint was going to diminish the midmarket of Web content management,” says Jarrod Gingras, analyst for The Real Story Group. “Analysts believed that SharePoint would bury the market.”
Instead, the midmarket players have grasped onto the shortcoming of SharePoint, says Gringas, leaving buyers with lots of options. Usability and ability to scale for more complicated and larger public websites is one example of how mature midmarket vendors are beating SharePoint to the punch.
“Some of the midmarket Web content management players have been around a long time and are more mature than the SharePoint Web publishing system is,” says Gringas.
Gringas sees no reason why the midmarket shouldn’t continue to thrive with increase competition. “It’s an even better buyer’s market for those looking for Web solutions. And, I expect these vendors to come out with even better tools.”
