PLATFORMS: Windows 95 and Windows NT.
BACKGROUND: MetLife is an international provider of financial services and products. MetLife provides a complete line of products which includes life insurance, annuities, mutual funds and pension products.
PROBLEM SOLVED: MetLife's auditing department had adopted a proactive testing program toward combating fraud and was seeking to incorporate data mining and data analysis tools in addition to traditional auditing software.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: WizRule is database independent software that converts raw data buried in a database into useful information for data entry and potential fraud detection. WizRule automatically determines all the rules governing a specified database, as well as deviations from the rules, using a proprietary algorithm based on association rules. WizRule can find spelling or unconditional rules, all the "if-then" rules with no limit to their number of clauses and formulae rules. WizRule reads the database once and then automatically separates cases deviating from the rules into data entry errors and suspicious entries. WizRule calculates the degree of deviation from the norm for each field in each record in the database with respect to the discovered rules. Separate reports are generated for data entry (spelling) errors, suspicious entries (deviations), as well as the report of all the rules that govern the database.
STRENGTHS: A user can have WizRule up and running with very little training. The user simply specifies the database to be analyzed and WizRule does the rest. The user may limit the response through WizRule options, such as specifying a minimum probability criterion, specifying the minimum cases to determine a rule or even restricting the search by rule type.
WEAKNESSES: If the user does not understand the data sufficiently, WizRule can generate an almost unlimited set of rules such that a PC can be churning away for hours in an attempt to analyze the data and draw inferences.
SELECTION CRITERIA: MetLife chose WizRule over several competing products because of its ease of use, flexibility of database inputs and price (under $1,400).
VENDOR SUPPORT: WizSoft came to several of our locations to demonstrate the product. They suggested applications that would make good candidates for their product and indicated applications to avoid.
DOCUMENTATION: A user's guide for both the installation and operation of WizRule was included with the software. In addition WizRule comes with on-line help.
