After reading the title of this column, you may be asking yourself, "What exactly does the Vice President of Operations for DAMA International do?"

Like each of the other board members, I actively participate in all of the board meetings and teleconferences. As VP of Operations, I have the responsibility of documenting each of those sessions and making those documents available to our membership on the DAMA International Web site ( For those meetings, I make sure that the teleconferencing services are properly set up for both for both international and U.S. attendees. I also take care of getting all teleconference needs established for any of the DAMA International subcommittees.

I also have other operational responsibilities. One very important responsibility is in ensuring that the DAMA International logo and trademark are legally protected, nationally and internationally.

Other current activities that I have been asked to perform are researching the possibility of health insurance for our membership and getting our bylaws up to date. In the past, I reviewed vendor contracts and our financial statements from those partnerships. I also serve, at the request of the president, on different ad hoc committees. For instance, I was a member of the committee that set up and oversaw the recent board elections.

The tasks other board members and I perform for DAMA International are varied and critically important to the continued successful operation of the organization. Board members are volunteers and provide various amounts of personal time in roles for DAMA International; some have done so for a number of years. I personally applaud the board members for their exceptional efforts in DAMA International's achieved success.

There are also several board members who, as I do, concurrently serve on local chapter boards. I am noting this fact to make you aware that there is plenty of room and need for your support of these organizations. I have been involved with DAMA in some manner for nearly 10 years. My participation is evidence that I believe these are excellent organizations that provide education and support in all areas of data management.

If you aren't a member of a DAMA chapter or you have not visited the informative DAMA International Web site, I urge you do so.
