DAMA International is a not-for-profit, vendor- independent, professional organization dedicated to advancing the concepts and practices of enterprise information and data management since 1987. DAMA's primary purpose is to promote the understanding, development and practice of managing data, information and knowledge as key enterprise assets.

DAMA International's goals are:

  • To help information and data management practitioners become more knowledgeable and skilled in information and data management professions.
  • To influence information and data management practices.
  • To support DAMA members and their local DAMA chapters.
  • To form alliances with other organizations with similar principles, purposes and goals.

Organizationally, DAMA International consists of the board of directors, the president's council, the board of advisors and affiliated chapters. The board of directors consists of eleven unpaid volunteer members elected for two-year terms of office: president; past president; vice presidents for Member, Chapter, Conference, Industry, Financial and Online Services, Education Services and Special Projects, Operations and Communications. Duties and responsibilities of these directors may be reviewed via the DAMA International Web site (www.dama.org) under DAMA Information.
The president's council consists of the presidents of each affiliated chapter or their designated representatives. This council assists the board of directors in establishing and fulfilling the goals and objectives of DAMA International. It also provides a forum for sharing chapters' experience and expertise, and identifying issues and chapter needs for the board of directors' attention. The board of advisors consists of from three to five recognized, influential and knowledgeable individuals in the field of information and data management.

The members of the board of advisors assist the board of directors in establishing plans and goals, advise the board of directors on DAMA International issues and act as goodwill ambassadors for DAMA International. The year 2000 board of advisors includes John Zachman, Clive Finklestein, Peter Aiken and Ron Powell. Currently, DAMA International has 27 affiliated chapters in the United States and eight in other parts of the world (Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne and Sydney, Australia; British Columbia and Toronto, Canada; Italy, and Scandinavia). We are also supporting the formation of a number of new chapters: London; Korea; Austin, Texas; Florida; and Kentucky. Check out our home page on the Internet to review progress on these incipient chapters.
