Membership is the key to any successful organization. DAMA's lifeblood and foremost resource is the activity of its members. It is through chapter meetings and DAMA conferences that data management practitioners meet to share knowledge, ideas, current practices and new techniques. Membership also allows us to make and maintain personal contacts which are so vital to our profession.

I joined the DAMA International board this year as the Vice President of Member Services. I am currently president of the Portland, Oregon, Chapter and have been a DAMA International liaison for the Portland and Phoenix chapters. I was very pleasantly surprised at the level of activity that I found in DAMA Member Services. In a short period, I have received requests from all over the United States on DAMA membership. Many cities in the U.S. do not have a local DAMA chapter. These members can still join DAMA as members-at-large. Internationally, we have members who reside all over the globe from Australia to Cuba.

My number one goal will be to respond quickly to new membership requests and questions, and serve our members-at-large worldwide who are not located near an active local chapter. Another goal will be to promote worldwide data management benefits and services to members-at-large. To successfully meet this strategic goal, I plan to administer a robust, no-nonsense Web site that links our members-at-large with information of interest and practical use to data management professionals everywhere. A substantial set of services for the members-at-large includes our list server. The list server provides the latest updates to conference calendars, vendor lists, the Speakers Bureau and countless links to other reputable IRM pages. I will also maintain a repository of members to support increased membership and foster relationships with other professional societies.

I look forward to serving as Vice President of Member Services and strive to grow and enhance our numbers and services to our members worldwide. For additional information, or if you would like to join DAMA, drop me a line at or
