Data Management Association International (DAMA-I) is the premiere professional organization for data management professionals worldwide. DAMA-I's primary purpose is to promote the understanding, development and practice of managing information and data as a key enterprise asset. This is not a small undertaking, and although DAMA-I is a volunteer organization, a solid financial footing is paramount to our success.

DAMA-I has two primary constituencies, member chapters and the overall data management community at large. DAMA-I provides a number of services to these two groups including underwriting symposiums, speaker tours, publication of professional guidelines and newsletters, and credit card services to member chapters. Equally important to the tangible benefits, DAMA-I provides a focal point to bring together those interested in data management for the sharing of ideas and intellectual discourse.

Y2K was a fantastic year financially for DAMA International with a net cash increase of 93 percent. This means that DAMA-I is able to move forward with greater assurance and continue to provide and enhance services to its constituencies.

DAMA-I is also taking moves to expand its international involvement and recognition. Last year DAMA-I held its first European conference in London, UK (co-located with the Meta Data Europe 2000 Conference) and also participated in ER 2000, the Conceptual Modeling Conference first hosted and now supported by Peter Chen. Because we are a financially sound organization, DAMA-I will continue to be involved in other conferences.

As Vice President of Financial Services, my primary interest is the financial viability of DAMA-I. However, DAMA-I's success is only important so long as we have members and a community to serve. DAMA-I needs your support as a contributing member of the organization and the community of data management professionals. Visit the DAMA-I Web page ( and consider getting involved. If there is not a chapter in your locale, you can join as a member-at-large. If you are accomplished in your field and have something to share with others, consider volunteering to speak for a chapter or writing an article for publication in DM Review or a local chapter newsletter.

Through financial stability and member support, DAMA- I will continue to provide and enhance the wide range of services we have supported over the years.
