As vice president of communications, one of my duties is to coordinate and present the DAMA International Annual Achievement Award.

The Achievement Award recognizes an outstanding individual who has contributed significantly to the advancement of information resource management as a practical discipline. This is a data professional who has communicated the importance of sharing information knowledge with the industry consistent with DAMA International's vision.

This criteria led me to think about the meaning of two key words: contribution and communication. Webster defines contribution as "to play a significant part in bringing about an end or result." Also, according to Webster, one of the many definitions for communication is "a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs or behavior." Another meaning is "a technique for expressing ideas effectively."

I recently had the opportunity to meet a person who is the essence of communication through the use of symbols that express information effectively. His contribution has significantly advanced technology within our industry. Allow me to tell you a little about him.

He is an internationally known expert (guru) in computer software. He is listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World. One of his papers is selected as one of the 38 most influential papers in computer science in the past 60 years. His work was adopted as the meta model for the ANSI Standard in Information Resource Directory System (IRDS). His approach has been ranked as the top methodology for database design by several surveys of Fortune 500 companies. His methodology is being practiced every day by tens of thousands of information systems analysts and programmers all over the world. He has held the position of M. J. Foster Distinguished Chair Professor of Computer Science since 1983. He has taught courses in database management systems, software engineering, database design and object oriented programming.

He recently started to teach graduate seminars focusing on Internet/Web, Java, XML and e-commerce.

As the coordinator of the DAMA International 12th Annual Achievement Award and on behalf of our affiliated member chapters, we proudly presented this award to the father of the entity relationship (ER) model, Dr. Peter Chen.

We would like to thank Dr. Peter Chen for his outstanding support in the field of data management and his great contributions to the information resource management industry.
