Have you ever pondered the question: What services does DAMA International provide to me, as an individual? During the last several months, I have been working closely with a representative group of chapter presidents, through the Presidents' Council, to identify services desired by our membership.

The first question raised by this committee was: Who are our members? Currently, we estimate chapter-based membership to be approximately 5,000 people. In addition to the chapters, DAMA also has more than 100 members at large members of DAMA International who are not affiliated with a local DAMA chapter. While most of these members are from the United States, they also reside in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, France, Germany, Korea, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Historically, all of the membership information has been maintained within each individual chapter. Our inability to assess a consolidated view of membership limits our ability to provide a robust set of services to our global members. We must know who each of you are on an international scale. In response, DAMA International is beginning its effort to provide a consolidated international perspective of membership information. This task is being embraced by the Presidents' Council for system development and implementation. We hope to have the final production version available during 2001.

As we gain a further awareness of our members, our focus can turn to the larger question: What services would you, the individual, like from DAMA International? The list of tangible benefits today primarily includes various professional and conference discounts. What are the tangible benefits you would like to see? We'd like to hear your ideas. Please, communicate your ideas to me via e-mail at VP_Member_Services@dama.org, to any member of the DAMA International Board or have your chapter president voice your opinions through the Presidents' Council.

One final thought as we move into a new year, please consider serving as an officer of your local chapter or DAMA International. As an all volunteer organization, DAMA will only be strong if you participate. Please visit the DAMA Web site at www.dama.org for your local chapter contact information.
