Last year was a very successful year for DAMA International. We made considerable progress toward meeting the year's objectives (see the March 2000 DAMA column). The primary objective for this year is to become the professional organization of choice for data management professionals and practitioners seeking information about all aspects of data management.

This year's other major objectives include providing a list of colleges and universities offering courses or programs in data management, providing a list of the data management standards that have been developed or are under development and providing some type of reference for data management products that are available while still maintaining a vendor-neutral status. Anyone interested in any of these items will be able to contact the appropriate organization from the DAMA International Web site.

The President's Council, through its President's Council Liaison, has become more involved in defining the future direction of DAMA International and the services that chapters and members expect to receive from DAMA International. We continue to work on expanding membership and chapter services.

Last year's DAMA International Conference in Washington, D.C., was well attended and received many good reviews. Based on that success, we are expanding the DAMA International Conference in Anaheim this year to include more workshops, tutorials, track sessions and SIGs that cover a wide variety of topics related to data management. The first DAMA International European Conference, held in London last November, was also very successful. Plans are being made for an expanded conference this year in London.

One of the accomplishments of the London conference was the beginning of new chapters in the UK and Germany. We continue to seek the establishment of new chapters both in the United States and in other countries and are looking at the possibility of Continental Liaisons similar to the President's Council Liaison.

DAMA International participated in the ER2000 Conceptual Modeling Conference in a very successful attempt to bring academic and industry people together. We will continue our efforts to encourage this interaction on a regular basis.

We continue to expand and improve our Web site ( Please consult this site for more information about DAMA International activities. You may contact me at or any of the board members through the Web site if you have comments, questions or suggestions about DAMA International.
