We are living in a time of accelerating change. I recently read James Gleik's book, Faster The Acceleration of Just About Everything, which explains how accelerating change affects nearly every aspect of our lives. The information technology discipline faces the challenges of accelerating change in both business and technology, and providing quality support to increasingly dynamic businesses.

My primary objective as President is to make DAMA the premier professional organization for the information technology discipline. The Board is reviewing the current role of DAMA to see how it might be altered to meet this objective and provide continuing services to its members.

A second objective is to increase both chapter and member-at- large membership. There is an increasing emphasis on public sector and small organization involvement. A wider scope includes emphasis on non-tabular data topics, stronger business support, new and evolving technologies, and critical issues in information technology.

A third objective is to seek stronger involvement of the President's Council in DAMA activities and to encourage a stronger interaction between chapters. There is a tremendous benefit to be gained from an active President's Council.

A fourth objective is to seek broader experience on the Advisory Board and a stronger involvement in setting the direction and scope of DAMA. The Advisory Board will contain representatives from the public sector, private sector, academia, consulting and new technology.

A fifth objective is to continue increasing the size and scope of the DAMA International Symposium so that it becomes the premier symposium for information technology. The largest International Symposium in the history of DAMA occurs this month. In conjunction with the Meta Data Conference, there will be workshops, tutorials, keynote presentations and six tracks that cover a wide variety of topics. Chapters are encouraged to continue hosting local conferences and DAMA Days, and to coordinate regional conferences to share ideas and lessons learned.

A sixth objective is broader and more formal recognition of individual achievements in the information technology discipline. The major achievements will be recognized at the International Symposium, and an award will be given for the most prominent achievement.

I hope you will join with me to meet these objectives and make DAMA the professional organization of choice for information technology practitioners. Please contact me at mhbrackett@aol.com with any thoughts you have about making DAMA a better organization.
