This year I am past president of DAMA International. After seven years on the DAMA International (DAMAI) Board of Directors, the time has come to step down. It has been a very rewarding experience to be part of the governing body of such an important and vital organization.

My responsibilities as past president include conducting the 2001 election for the DAMAI board of directors and facilitating the nomination and selection of the 2001 Advisory Board.

There may be four open positions on the DAMAI Board of Directors for 2001. The prerequisites to serve include the following:

  • Currently a member of a DAMA-affiliated chapter, having served as an officer of such for at least one year or currently a member-at-large of DAMA International in good standing, having been such for at least three years;
  • Prepared to make a serious commitment in time and energy, with enough financial support to attend at least three board meetings per year;
  • Able to communicate via e-mail.

A term of office begins on January 1 and lasts for two years. Nominations will be solicited from the DAMA affiliated chapters beginning on Friday, September 29, 2000, and all nominations must be received prior to the fourth Friday in October (October 27, 2000). If none are received from the member chapters, the DAMAI Board of Directors will seek volunteers to fill the open positions. Please e-mail nominations to
The selection of members of the DAMAI Advisory Board is by nomination from members of the DAMAI Board of Directors. Qualifications for this position include that the person:

  • Be a respected member of the data/information resource management (DRM/IRM) community;
  • Possess demonstrable experience in DRM/IRM to the extent that the person can offer expert advice to the DAMAI organization regarding direction, theories, practices, problems and solutions;
  • Be willing to assist and lead DAMAI in establishing and maintaining a proper direction as a dynamic professional organization;
  • Demonstrate support of the DAMAI organization, mission and goals;
  • Understand and accept the "pro bono" nature of the advisor role with DAMAI.

Any qualifying individual receiving a two-thirds vote of the board will become a member of the Board of Advisors. There will be a minimum of three advisors and a maximum of five. Advisors must attend at least one meeting annually as determined by the DAMAI Board of Directors.
