REVIEWER: Bridget Haggerty, director of university applications for Oregon Health & Sciences University.BACKGROUND: Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU) is an academic healthcare center with missions to serve healthcare, education and research. OHSU employs more than 11,000 Oregonians and serves 188,000 patients annually, fueling $2.35 billion in economic activity. OHSU includes the schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing and science and engineering; OHSU Hospital and Doernbecher Children's Hospital; numerous primary care and specialty clinics; multiple research institutes; and several outreach and community service units.
PLATFORMS: OHSU runs on HP Tru 64 and UNIX operating system.
PROBLEM SOLVED: OHSU initially implemented DecisionPoint's pre-built, finance-centric data warehouse to centralize data from Oracle applications and provide all users with on-demand reporting capabilities without affecting the transaction system's performance. With DecisionPoint, departmental "super users" can write and distribute their own reports as necessary, and analysts and administrators can run ad hoc queries without relying on IT to code custom reports.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: DecisionPoint's pre-built data models (star schemas) running in the warehouse ensure that 1,100 business users at OHSU can create accurate, timely reports each day for analysis to better manage the business. In addition to running the GL, AP, HR, purchasing and grant accounting data models, OHSU used DecisionPoint tools to build a data model for labor distribution. During the next year, OHSU will modify the HR data model to provide analysis on applicants for recruiting purposes, as this was a core reporting need that was unmet in Oracle. By using the DecisionPoint data models and tools, we delivered the solution in one-third of the time compared to developing the solution in house.
STRENGTHS: DecisionPoint provides us with a strong, sound software solution that is not only quick to install and implement, but also easy to maintain as changes occur across our IT environment. We recently brought the OHSU Foundation's data onto Oracle Financials, and because DecisionPoint's warehouse is optimized for Oracle Financials, end users are now able to get integrated reporting across all sources for analysis in less than three months, while still maintaining donor privacy and other appropriate security measures. In addition, we were impressed with DecisionPoint's extensive knowledge of Oracle as well as its robust analytic capabilities via the pre-built data models. They are easy to install and give end users extensive capabilities for ad hoc queries.
WEAKNESSES: We have experienced slow extract completion times. We believe this could be attributed to extensive customization to create a labor distribution data model and suboptimal hardware. The only other possible weakness is the reporting interface we're currently using.
SELECTION CRITERIA: At the time, DecisionPoint was the only product available that offered pre-built data models optimized for Oracle Applications.
DELIVERABLES: With DecisionPoint, we provided end users with self-service reporting and analysis across numerous university funding sources spanning our two hospitals and many clinics, independent departmental budgets and our research programs.
VENDOR SUPPORT: DecisionPoint has been a great development partner. From the start, they listened to our requirements requests, which helped us deliver products that fulfill the end-user needs. Post-implementation, when new requirements arose, such as needing to add new fields, DecisionPoint helped deliver the requested change in less than one day. At one point, we lost our core development staff and had very little remaining in-house knowledge with the product. DecisionPoint's help desk stepped in to fulfill our support problems and also provided training over the phone when new staff was hired.
DOCUMENTATION: DecisionPoint's documentation is outstanding. We recently hired an employee who lacked data warehouse and Oracle Applications expertise. The employee quickly came up to speed with the documentation and a three-day training course from DecisionPoint and now manages the warehouse on a day-to-day basis.
