Contrary to industry reports, META Group, a leading provider of information technology (IT) research, advisory services and strategic consulting, announced it expects overall packaged software pricing to decrease for the first time in over a decade, over the next three to five years.

According to META Group, the drop in software pricing is due to a myriad of reasons: competition from new application providers building on top of infrastructure services from IBM, Microsoft, SAP, Oracle, et al.; the increasing availability of open source solutions; the growth of third- party application service providers and the increased exploitation of offshore labor, among others.
