October marks the beginning of autumn, a time to prepare for an upcoming year with new challenges. For DAMA, a new season is a time of renewal and change in leadership at both the chapter level and in DAMA International. I have personally served as a DAMA officer for nine rewarding years, first with the San Francisco DAMA chapter and now with DAMA International. DAMA service has brought me tremendous professional benefits through innumerable contacts and exposure in the industry. It has provided me opportunities to meet and learn from the world experts in Information Resource Management (IRM). Additionally, through participation in DAMA, I have made many lasting friendships with fellow professionals dedicated to a common goal: improvement of data management practices and data quality. Together we have experienced enormous pride and satisfaction at seeing an expanded awareness, understanding, competence and effectiveness for practitioners in our field.
I invite you, DM Review readers and data management professionals, to join me in the rewards and benefits of DAMA service, whether at the local chapter level or with DAMA International. Each organization has various board positions calling for different skills and interests, as briefly described below:
Education programs Collaborating with renowned experts and practitioners to arrange quality educational events and working with academic institutions to establish certification in our industry.
Publicity and Communications Publishing newsletters and developing other communication mechanisms for keeping the membership and public informed about DAMA activities.
Industry Services Working with vendors of relevant data management products and services in connection with events and programs to benefit our constituents.
Finance and Treasury Stewarding the resources of DAMA and funding its activities.
Online Services Building and running Web sites, e-commerce and similar endeavors for the advancement of our profession.
Member and Chapter Services Directly supporting our membership either one-on-one or through development of new chapters all over the world.
Presidency Exercising executive skills to keep the organization running smoothly and lead it on a positive path toward meeting strategic goals.
I strongly urge you to consider joining and participating in a DAMA organization near you. Contact me (email@example.com) or your local chapter for more information. If there is no DAMA chapter near you, we can help you start a chapter with other like-minded professionals in your area. I am sure you will find the DAMA leadership experience a very rewarding one.
