REVIEWER: Mike Gabaly III, director of enterprise performance management for Lockheed Martin Corporation.

BACKGROUND: Lockheed Martin Corporation, an advanced technology company, was formed in March 1995 with the merger of two of the world's premier technology companies, Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta Corporation. Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, Lockheed Martin employs approximately 125,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2002 sales of $26.6 billion, a backlog of more than $70 billion and free cash flow of $1.7 billion.

PLATFORMS: HP Servers, Oracle Database Management and UNIX operating systems.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Khalix by Longview Solutions helped Lockheed Martin bring data from multiple data sets across our organization into a single unified database. A single source of information provided visibility into the complex relationships that impact our profitability. Khalix also reduced our closing cycle by 8 to 10 days, which improves our corporate agility. Finally, Khalix automates our closing processes and analysis which assures us of the integrity of the data that we report.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Khalix provides Lockheed Martin with transparency into the real drivers of our performance. It also provides real-time information availability so that our managers can take corrective action as soon it becomes apparent that actual performance is diverging from planned performance. Additionally, Khalix provides a single database for all of the financial information that we require to plan, forecast, analyze and report upon results for all of our businesses. Users have the ability to drill down and find the root causes of performance variances.

STRENGTHS: Khalix is a fully integrated, single solution for all of our consolidation and planning requirements. Users are provided one set of structures, models and business rules for all of their budgeting, forecasting, management reporting, analysis and statutory reporting requirements. Khalix' robust security provides its users with the exact data that they require to accomplish their goals on either a read or update basis while protecting the integrity of their data from unwanted updates.

WEAKNESSES: The Khalix interface is not as pretty as some of the other products that we have seen.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Khalix was the only product that was able to provide the robust performance that Lockheed Martin required to support a number of data feeds, calculations and users that are required for us to close our books. It also stood apart from other products in its ability to quickly deliver financial information to our users in time to make the critical decisions required to remain competitive in the sectors in which we compete.

DELIVERABLES: Lockheed Martin is in a number of different lines of business and serves a wide variety of public and private sector customers. Khalix makes it possible for us to gather information from all of our different businesses on a real-time basis to support all of our management and statutory reporting requirements.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Longview Solutions has been one of the most supportive vendors that I personally have had the experience of working with. The quality of their people combined with their inherent culture focused on optimum customer service makes for a very satisfying vendor/client relationship.

DOCUMENTATION: Because we were a beta customer for a major new release of the product, we benefited from an intensive knowledge transfer during the implementation process. If I were implementing the product now, I would definitely take advantage of Longview's new role-based e-learning product, LRAL, which provides just-in-time training to a widely dispersed user group via the Web.
