REVIEWER: Shane Hewitson, VP of business development at AWPRx.
BACKGROUND: AWPRx helps workers' compensation beneficiaries fill prescriptions and manage claims online. The company also manages those prescriptions on behalf of insurance carriers and third-party administrators. All in all, the company is affiliated with more than 95 percent of the pharmacies in the U.S. These are extremely data-intensive responsibilities that require communications among insurance providers, pharmacies and the affected workers. By incorporating this information into its system, AWPRx can immediately reject prescriptions for noncovered medications or medical devices.
PLATFORMS: We use Jitterbit to integrate with the soon-to-be legacy Oracle databases Web services (SOAP), flat-file and XML data across the pharmacy network as well as from inside and outside the firewall with our clients' data.
PROBLEM SOLVED: AWPRx's data processing, storage and network capabilities are critical to the company's livelihood. Even downtimes as short as a few minutes will negatively impact the firm. AWPRx's first foray into cloud computing came earlier this year. AWPRx’s previous software as a service system required a lot of additional, ongoing code writing and required an Oracle database. To replace it, AWPRx implemented a Amazon EC3 storage solution with Jitterbit linking it to its cloud computing environment on Salesforce.com. The ForceRx cloud lets AWPRx employees access applications and on-demand systems seamlessly, delivering improved data management to all authorized personnel. Jitterbit is allowing us to automate even more processes than the previous environment. The stability of Jitterbit minimizes adjustments made by our clients or vendors when editing, removing or adding fields. We're now realizing more of the benefits of a large data center and are days away from being fully in the cloud.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: With Jitterbit, AWPRx has cut its allocated integration budget by more than 80 percent and seen a huge return. The facility invested about $16,000 on the new technology and expects to save up to $75,000 by the end of the year, based initially on the savings realized by partnering with Jitterbit and Salesforce.com. AWPRx has saved extensively on internal training, support and development costs by moving applications off its own Oracle J2EE data center and onto the servers of its cloud computing partners.
STRENGTHS: Jitterbit's environment allows us to have greater consistency when creating connections. This has minimized programming time for us and allowed us to add new functionality or make modifications to existing connections that needed tweaking. The visualization has allowed our department managers to get involved in the process to see how the workflows will improve productivity for their departments.
WEAKNESSES: While Jitterbit does a great job of pulling down Web services WSDLs, it would be great if the user interface would automatically highlight changes to the WSDL so that when cloud vendors update their application programming interfaces it is easier to see what has changed. Currently Jitterbit will only present the new structure, and it's up to the user to know what's new.
SELECTION CRITERIA: We looked at competitors, but the price was $150,000 a year, not including support or training.
DELIVERABLES: Our client efile group had been using a data integration product, but they were stuggling with its use in the cloud. We needed a true cloud-based solution, and that’s what spurred me to look around. I stumbled across Jitterbit while doing a search for integration tools. We tried Jitterbit for 45 minutes and had a working solution to our problem. We were able to go to production with the project the same day of the download without having to buy anything from Jitterbit, and subsequently purchased a support agreement from them on our own schedule and terms. We’ve made Jitterbit the key component of our ForceRx SaaS platform.
VENDOR SUPPORT: Jitterbit came to AWPRx with a tailor-made, three-day training course that made use of actual cases and real-time files. After the trainer left, within two or three days we were up and running and had created a single template for all of our client efiles versus individual, one-out file layouts. We will be able to roll out our next client almost imediately versus several days of creating a new layout.
DOCUMENTATION: The Jitterbit designer includes integrated help on every screen for every function, and the forums and online wiki offer another level of information on how to apply Jitterbit to various problems.
