The events of September 11 will cause firms to reduce spending on information technology in the near future, but the long-term outlook is more upbeat as more companies begin to rebuild their data network infrastructure.

"While lost business revenues totaled in the hundreds of billions of dollars, lower consumer and business confidence will influence the downturn of the IT industry," says John Gantz, IDC chief research officer.
