BACKGROUND: As a global communications leader with 40 years of experience, Intelsat helps service providers, broadcasters, corporations and governments deliver information and entertainment anywhere in the world, instantly, securely and reliably. Intelsat's expanding solutions portfolio enables customers to enhance communications networks, venture into new markets and grow their businesses with confidence.

PLATFORMS: The data warehouse uses the Oracle9i platform running on HP-UX. Management of the data warehouse is through Kalido, running on a Windows Server.

PROBLEM SOLVED: In the past four years, Intelsat has successfully migrated from an international treaty organization to a private company. To do so, we designed and implemented a business intelligence (BI) initiative, with KALIDO at the heart, to provide us with a more comprehensive analysis of the business from the ground up, thereby giving us the flexibility required to make the company a more customer- and market-focused commercial entity. The ability of KALIDO to provide us with a global view of the business with granular detail has enabled our top executives and business users to obtain top-level views of key performance indicators (such as available network capacity, network profitability, sales, customers, service and suppliers) across multiple systems; reduce the time required to report monthly revenues by 50%; and increase our monthly accuracy of inventory used compared to revenue generated to more than 98%. 

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: KALIDO has enabled us to rapidly create and manage an adaptive data warehouse, which is the foundation of our BI solution. KALIDO provides consistent management information, even as we continue to undergo organizational transformation. Data is extracted from more than one dozen source systems, including Siebel, on both a daily and monthly basis. The daily load gives us the capability to use current information to manage ongoing activities of the business. The monthly load incorporates feeds from both the financial and operational systems, providing a comprehensive view of the business in the context of our official financial closing. Because KALIDO has incorporated data warehousing best practices, the database objects are standardized, simplifying access by our third-party BI tools (Business Objects, Actuate and Excel). More importantly, the business users are responsible for the data provided by KALIDO. The software's easy-to-use components remove many of the management issues of data warehousing while automating a number of functions that previously required significant manpower. Because we can build and maintain a data warehouse so rapidly, we are able to spend the majority of our time working with the business to understand the meaning of the data as well as establish a formal data stewardship program.

STRENGTHS: By automating many of the everyday tasks of data warehousing, KALIDO enabled us to utilize an iterative data warehouse methodology. The resulting dialog between IT and the business community created an environment that kept the business needs ahead of technical implementation details. KALIDO enabled Intelsat to focus on the information necessary to manage the business, not the process for extracting the underlying data.

WEAKNESSES: While Kalido's partnership with Business Objects helped in some instances, greater integration between the two companies is desirable. Improved meta data sharing will significantly improve Business Objects' ability to respond to the rapidly changing KALIDO environment.

SELECTION CRITERIA: The goal of our BI initiative was to deliver commercial BI capability across the entire organization within just three months. We reviewed several options, including custom-building our own data warehouse. KALIDO's ability to adapt to a constantly changing business environment and enable rapid data warehouse development provides the basis for a low-risk implementation methodology.

DELIVERABLES: We initially leveraged KALIDO as we delivered Microsoft Services cubes via Excel to a small focused audience while completing a BI tools evaluation. After selecting Business Objects, it was easy to roll out reports and KPIs to the entire company.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Kalido's support has been personal, detailed and continuously available, which is unique in this industry.

DOCUMENTATION: The documentation is comprehensive.
