The Berlex Library and Information Center (LInC) supports business and therapeutics units at our two New Jersey sites, Wayne and Montville. I am one of the library's two professional information managers. We support all reference and literature searches, as well as FDA/regulatory activities. We also process all invoices, support global licensing for U.S. materials and produce two daily newsletters highlighting issues of importance to Berlex's drug development activities.
Our business and therapeutic units require instant and efficient access to critical research and information which needs to be personalized to their areas of expertise. However, we faced a significant challenge: The company's end users obtained information by browsing a static intranet with limited searching capabilities. It made searching for information slow and painstaking. Worse yet, there was no real way to individualize information. It became clear to us that we needed to find a better way to supply our end users with the kind of individualized and relevant content they needed to make the best business decisions possible.
To meet the challenge of providing this kind of dynamic and customized information for departments and individuals, we first migrated all of our databases (Sydney PLUS and ProCite) into one seamless Inmagic database. The migration was easy. We were able to seamlessly pull the data from Sydney PLUS and import it into Inmagic.
By implementing the Inmagic software suite (DB/TextWorks, DB/Text for Libraries, DB/Text WebPublisher PRO, DB/Text Web Form, DB/Text ODBC Server, DB/Text PowerPack and DB/Text Intranet Spider), the LInC's intranet site became much more dynamic. We designed smart search resources that enabled end users in their departments to access all the information from a completely customized portal.
With a dynamic intranet site, our users can search interactively. The LInC also developed personal "shopping lists" for end users within their departments that allowed them to provide resources at the individual level. We have created the links to different journals for end users. The system has a Web links database that they are able to import.
With Inmagic's products, we were able to individualize data records, develop indexes for databases and create individual pages for each person within the department based on an initial template and indexed terms. We found the Inmagic software to be very easy to implement and use. It was up and running very quickly. Inmagic was definitely the correct choice.
The business intelligence component of our system also utilizes IntelliMagic, Inmagic's market intelligence platform. IntelliMagic uses a single interface to deliver actionable information to the desktop by contextually merging existing internal business intelligence with streaming e-content.
This provides end users with up-to-the-moment relevant information snapshots on the subjects of their choice. Through IntelliMagic, we are able to make this information accessible and searchable on a 24x7x365 basis via the corporate intranet.
We have IntelliMagic up on our intranet site and use it to monitor our competitors and customers. We use IntelliMagic to locate information from online resources such as NewsEdge, U.S. Patents, SEC documents and the NDA Pipeline. The information is then organized and delivered to end users' desktops via Inmagic's content management system.
Many people within the Berlex organization have commented on the system and what we do with it. The feedback has been very positive, and it affirms that implementing Inmagic was the right choice.
Ultimately, the greatest lesson we learned from this experience was that we were able to complete this project all by ourselves. We know that there are larger libraries with bigger budgets and more staff that have created fancier pages using expensive and time-intensive software. However, working within our restrictions of smaller budgets and limited technical support, we were able to use Inmagic's customizable software package and our own organizational training to create something that is both necessary and cost-effective for our company.
|The IntelliMagic business intelligence system by Inmagic allows companies to merge existing internal business intelligence with streaming external subscription resources to provide customers with timely and relevant snapshots of the subjects of their choice. Through IntelliMagic, this information is accessible and searchable 24x7 via the corporate intranet and other defined publishing formats.|
