PLATFORMS: We are running BusinessObjects InfoView Wireless Edition on a Microsoft NT server with Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) as the Web server. The end users are currently viewing reports with cell phones and most have phone.com as their phone browser.
PROBLEM SOLVED: As a consulting group with employees constantly on the road, the management team and consultants needed to access accurate project information and make quick decisions based on this information. We needed to manage our resources and project finances more effectively. We knew where the data was but were unable to get it to our distributed and mobile workforce. With BusinessObjects WebIntelligence and BusinessObjects InfoView Wireless Edition, it is now possible for us to view important, accurate account information anywhere, anytime. We now have the ability to view reports from our cell phones or any personal digital assistant (PDA) whether we are on the road, in a hotel or at a desk. Using wireless capabilities to handle all of our business intelligence operations has a made a huge difference in our efficiency. The amount of time it has saved has made it worth the investment.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: BusinessObjects InfoView Wireless Edition was easy to install and configure and has not shown any "bugs" since we have been using it. It works in conjunction with WebIntelligence, so the report writing is very user friendly.
STRENGTHS: The biggest strength is that InfoView Wireless Edition is completely integrated with the BusinessObjects Suite. We did not have to do anything special to allow users to connect to the system. Because users can access InfoView Wireless Edition with the same username and password that they use for WebIntelligence, they do not get confused trying to remember several different passwords.
WEAKNESSES: Standards and infrastructure for the wireless industry are still new and evolving. The main weakness is the maturity of the technology. Wireless reports are not as sophisticated as reports viewed over a PC. We have to keep this in mind when we are creating reports to be viewed with InfoView Wireless Edition. I understand that the upcoming edition of InfoView Wireless will include off-line mode access to address some of the sophistication issues.
SELECTION CRITERIA: There are actually two reasons we selected InfoView Wireless Edition. The first reason for selecting Business Objects was the company's stability in the marketplace. They are what we consider the "800-pound gorilla" in their space, and we like knowing that they will be around when we need support in the future. The second was the fact that we were already using WebIntelligence, so it was very simple for us to integrate with InfoView Wireless Edition. We installed it on the same server, and we were up and running within a few hours.
DELIVERABLES: We use InfoView Wireless Edition for quick hits of information while on the road. Reports include resource utilization, bill rates, employee hours by project, customer accounts by regional office, project status, etc.
VENDOR SUPPORT: The support has been great. Business Objects is a fantastic company to work with. They desire to be the best, so they are always listening to their customers. If there is something that they are missing in a current software release, it is guaranteed that it will be in the next release because Business Objects constantly asks its customers what they would like to see and actually listens.
DOCUMENTATION: Documentation is not extensive, but it contained what we needed and was easy to understand. It was so easy to run InfoView Wireless Edition that it didn't really matter.
