REVIEWER: Joe Olexa, group manager, IT control balancing at Progressive Auto Insurance.

BACKGROUND: Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, Progressive is one of the largest auto insurance groups in the U.S. Progressive has led and maintained innovation in the insurance industry, with an accessible strategy of offering competitive auto insurance rates for drivers since 1937. The company has built its reputation by continuously improving its products and services and for its “name your own price” program. Progressive customers can purchase their auto insurance by phone, online or through an independent insurance agent. Progressive has accumulated an estimated 10 million policies.

PLATFORMS: We are running Infogix ACR/Summary on our mainframe, Infogix Assure on AIX version 5.3, Infogix Insight version 6.1, and Infogix Insight version 6.2 running in a UNIX environment.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Progressive uses end-to-end balancing, which is transactional balancing that follows new and renewal business transactions through a number of systems and compares the results across systems to identify any possible quality errors or transactions.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: The largest benefit results from more timely identification of errors due to the automated system. For example, if you obtain a quote from Progressive Insurance, we capture your quoting information, and when you buy the policy, we compare information across a number of different systems to ensure that the information didn’t change from the beginning to the end of its lifecycle.

STRENGTHS: The main strength is the system’s flexibility and being able to grab data from any application on our platform. A second strength is that Infogix Assure has the ability to operate out of the band, which means it does not affect our daily production.

WEAKNESSES: The main product weakness is that our environment is very complex, and the Infogix Assure product needed to be adapted for this more intricate application. To their credit, Infogix worked hand in hand with us to further develop the Infogix Assure product to meet our environmental needs.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Our original intention was that we were going to build our own balancing and control routines and systems but we decided to purchase the Infogix Assure tool instead. It was chosen primarily because of our existing familiarity with another Infogix product, ACR/Summary, which provides controls in a mainframe environment. Infogix Assure was designed for operation in a distributed environment.

DELIVERABLES: The system generates exception reports to help identify where we may have system and application issues. Infogix Assure generates these on a daily basis by creating an output file that we then disseminate to our business contacts who research to confirm or deny the existence of a true error.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Infogix has offered superior help throughout the process. They see that we have unique needs for the applications and support us to ensure our success. When we need help, Infogix is there to provide immediate assistance, beginning with our dedicated account executive. Throughout the organization from senior management down to customer support we find Infogix to be very engaged, supportive and responsive.

DOCUMENTATION: Infogix provides great resources.
