Q:

I'm currently in the process of gathering the business requirements for an enterprise data warehouse. One of them is the ability to mine retail POS data. I am looking for two things: 1) How should I prepare the POS data in the warehouse? 2) Which statistical method(s) is applied in order to answer the question: "When wine then also fresh meat in the basket?"

A:

Chuck Kelley’s Answer: This is typical market-basket analysis, so any tool that provides this function would be acceptable. I would build an atomic level data warehouse and then build a data mart to provide the chosen tool with the data in the format they prefer. Some tools work best in stars. Some work best with snowflakes. Others prefer a more flattened data structure. So provide the data in the way your exploration data mart tool wants it.
