Q:

I'm a manager at a very large corporation, and we have used QMF for years to extract data from our mainframe. Our new strategy is to duplicate this data on an Oracle server (download the tables daily) along with data from other sources. Our IT department is telling us that we should rewrite all our QMF queries using a new tool (Cognos). I would prefer to continue to use QMF to access our data. I believe it is inefficient to rewrite all of our queries. My question: Can I use QMF for Windows to access our data from the Oracle database? Would we have to modify our present queries to do so? We have SQL net loaded on our PC's. Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

Sid Adelman's Answer: I assume you are on the business side or support the business. I also assume that you pay the bill for IT services, one way or another. Before the IT department should decide on a strategy that involves a major change for you, they should have asked you if you were willing to learn another tool and rewrite everything. There is nothing wrong with Oracle or Cognos, but there is something wrong with the IT department expecting you to do something that, apparently, makes no business sense to you.
