IBM introduced a new portfolio of cloud offerings, the SmartCloud Foundation, which the company says includes a core set of private-cloud functions distilled from thousands of IBM client engagements and millions of cloud-based transactions the company manages every day.

The portfolio is designed to help both entry-level and more sophisticated cloud users quickly adopt private clouds from scratch or transform current virtualized systems into cloud infrastructures.

The SmartCloud Foundation portfolio includes SmartCloud Entry, which provides building blocks to create private clouds on virtualized IBM System x and Power Systems hardware. IBM says the offering provides simplified initialization and administration for cloud environments on Power and x86 systems. Organizations can quickly scale to more advanced cloud solutions as business demands and workloads increase.

Another component is SmartCloud Provisioning software, which provides a provisioning engine and image management system to create or provision virtual machines. The software can scale to more than 4,000 virtual machines in less than an hour, according to IBM.

The portfolio also includes SmartCloud Monitoring, software that contains business-policy and technical-policy analysis to enable better capacity planning and workload placement. The software’s predictive and historical analytics can help companies prevent outages of cloud services while reducing costs.

“We designed the SmartCloud Foundation to have the essential elements to build, and, importantly, manage private clouds with the greatest ease,” Scott Hebner, vice president, IBM Software Group, said in a statement.

IBM also introduced SmartCloud Application Services, a new platform-as-a-service that supports a range of enterprise applications, and SmartCloud Ecosystem, new services for IBM partners and independent software vendors to help small and medium business clients adopt cloud models
