International Business Machines Corp. is paying $1 billion to buy Informix Corp.'s database software business.
Informix gives IBM one of the leading database systems used in data warehousing, business intelligence and transaction-handling systems, which is used by more than 100,000 customers, including Verizon, Sears and Sabre. IBM says that once it completes the deal it will integrate Informix software into the IBM database system and combine sales forces.
