IBM announced the first problem determination testing that focuses exclusively on giving database administrators (DBAs) extra skills for resolving complex technical issues on their own, faster and more efficiently.

Developed by IBM's leading DB2 Universal Database technical support staff, the new exam speeds up the process of identifying and resolving issues, reducing the need for DBAs or Business Partners supporting customers to call IBM customer support. Although customer service and support is offered at no extra charge with many DB2 Universal Database products and offerings – unlike some competitors – DBAs can be more efficient if they solve common problems on their own and Business Partners can add more value through the services they offer their customers.

IBM is also enhancing its Mobile Academy to include skills training on the latest version of DB2 Content Manager, a companion product to IBM DB2 Universal Database that helps organize, store, retrieve and present unstructured information, such as multimedia. IBM's Mobile Academy will now conveniently bring DB2 Content Manager version 8.2 training on site to customers and Business Partners, maximizing their skills dollars and eliminating both the need for expensive training centers and employee travel to attend IT classes.

The new DB2 Problem Determination Mastery Exam provides DBAs with necessary skills to:

  • investigate and isolate database issues including the implementation of a workaround or fix
  • resolve common installation issues such as upgrades, instance creation and license management
  • identify the source of communication problems in a client/server environment
  • utilize DB2's problem determination tools and interpret the diagnostic information they provide to prevent future issues
  • flag application development errors and analyze information stored in both database and operating system logs

A DBA that has passed the new exam is equipped to resolve up to 75 percent of common technology issues encountered in the field. To prepare for the exam, DBAs can take advantage of free study materials on the DB2 Technical Support Web site. This year, more than 25,000 DBAs have accessed these free tutorials on the topic of problem determination.
The demand for DB2 Content Manager training has grown in tandem with the rise in popularity of IBM's enterprise content management portfolio. IBM's DB2 Content Manager family posted revenue growth of 64 percent for Q1-03, year-over-year and the number of DB2 Content Manager certifications has grown 100 percent this year alone.

IBM's DB2 Universal Database certifications grew 240 percent in 2002, reflecting the database's traction in the marketplace and further establishing DB2 as a cost effective investment with a ready supply of skilled database administrators.

The DB2 Problem Determination Master Exam takes one-hour to complete and is available immediately for $40 (U.S.). The exam is administered by Prometric worldwide at http://ibmtesting.prime.prometric.com.

It is recommended that DBAs should attain the IBM Certified Database Administrator Certification prior to testing. For more information on this new exam and problem determination, visit http://www.ibm. com/software/data/support/pdm/db2exam.html.
