April 11, 2012 – IBM is putting its infrastructure expertise and solutions behind a new systems family for physical and virtual data management.

IBM PureSystems focuses on cutting the amount of time and in-house dedications toward enterprise data systems. The three offerings announced Wednesday in the rollout include: “Scale-In” System Design, which integrates server, storage and networking into an automated machine; Patterns of Expertise, software embedded with IBM know-how on configurations, upgrades and applications requirements; and pre-configured Cloud Ready integration for faster creation of private deployments.

Patterns of Expertise are doled out in reusable, downloadable packages based on input from IBM IT managers, information on applications from more than 125 outside vendors, as well as in-house configurations.

IBM stated that the new systems family is the result of $2 billion in research, development and acquisitions during the past four years. Steve Mills, senior vice president and group executive of IBM’s software and systems group, said in a release that the intention of the new systems family is to provide traditional data center staffing and functionality to a wider set of enterprise data management and cloud deployments.

Richard Ptak, managing partner, Ptak, Noel and Associates, says the new releases give IBM new paths for its customers and partners to potentially find benefits and cost savings with their data center operations. Ptak sees this as a part of a broader change afoot, as vendors lean toward “infrastructure as software” and the distinctions between hardware and software fade. “The workload or service is most important – and what the intelligent system idea along with the cloud and significant standards efforts do is move us in a direction that will allow the service/workload to create and run on an operating infrastructure that meets the delivery goals of the enterprise that is providing and/or consuming the service,” Ptak says.

PureFlex and PureApplication systems, the first two models of the PureSystems family, ship to customers this quarter, and support POWER and Intel processors.
