Q:

Question: I would like to know if you have any studies comparing different software for business intelligence?

A:

David Marco’s Answer: At Enterprise Warehousing Solutions we have studies on ETL (extraction, transformation and load) tools evaluation and meta data integration tools Evaluation. For more information please feel free to visit http://www.ewsolutions.com/research_paper.asp.

Les Barbusinski’s Answer: The most comprehensive survey was published in July 2001 that is still very relevant.   It was titled The OLAP Survey and was authored by Nigel Pendse.   You can purchase it directly on the Web at http://www.survey.com/reports/olap/ or call the market research company, Survey.com, directly at (408) 907-0001.

The survey contrasts ROLAP vs. MOLAP vs. DOLAP tools and ranks most of the major BI tools for a variety of characteristics such as market penetration, suitability to task, Web deployments, percentage of purchases that end up as “shelfware,” customer loyalty to the product, success rates, problems encountered, etc.   The only weaknesses in the article is that it did not survey Informatica’s new BI offering (it was released after the study), and the incomplete results on Microsoft’s BI offering (because it was released just as the survey started).
