Q:

I recently wrote a dissertation where I developed a generic data mining life cycle. I am also very interested in urban public transport agencies (mainly bus operators). Would you have any suggestions for a Ph.D. topic combining these two areas? I know that there is a great need for research in that area since the transportation sector doesn't really apply data mining as an innovative technology (apart from the airline industry). I would be very grateful for your suggestions.

A:

Chuck Kelley’s Answer: Actually the transportation sector (other than the airline industry) is very active in data mining. They look at efficiencies in routes, cargo handling and maintenance to name a few (along the line of transportation sector, not necessarily public bus operators). Motor coach vacations are another industry which has done a reasonable amount of data mining. So, a topic might be efficient of routes and maintenance based on type of bus and its operations.
