Q:

I am looking for a reporting tool with a simple report development interface. The usual suspects (BO, Brio, Cognos) are too complex. Is there something new, perhaps pre-IPO that I could consider. 4,000 users up for grabs.

A:

Sid Adelman’s Answer: If Business Objects, Brio and Cognos are too complex, you might look at the way they have been implemented. This would include the training appropriately geared for the audience (give the casual users just the functions they need). Canned/predefined reports stored in report library should make it reasonably easy for users who can't or don't want complexity. Before you go for an untried tool, consider what would happen if the vendor folded. Make sure the vendor is both financially viable and is having success selling the product. Clay Rehm’s Answer: If you have not found out on your own already, there are still plenty of players in this market. If the usual suspects do not work for you, you can try Crystal Reports, Microsoft VBA (Excel, etc), Maximal Max, Actuate and ProClarity. Pieter Mimno (pmimno@mimno.com) is a great resource – he is an independent consultant who stays on top of the top data warehouse tools.
