Q:

I am currently responsible for a large MOLAP environment with lots of users and I am now responsible for taking over a large relational data warehouse. Is there a set of standard questions I can ask that will help me determine when it's best to use a MOLAP strategy vs. aggregating in a relational materialized view?

A:

Clay Rehm's Answer: During your one-on-one and group interviews, the standard set of questions would include:

  • How will you use the data? (Show examples)
  • How current is the data?
  • What are your search parameters?
  • What are your sort parameters?

After the interviews are complete, you should be able to compile your findings and have patterns developed to help determine a strategy.
