Q:

I am a student and need help. My university intends to build a whole business intelligence infrastructure and as a researcher with project management skills I have been asked to:

  1. Do a literature search on Business Intelligence
  2. Conduct a critical evaluation
  3. Define the main aims and objectives of the project.

How would you go about doing this?

A:

Sid Adelman’s Answer: I assume the critical evaluation is of your existing environment. That would include the skills available for the project, the condition of the source data, existing tools and their capabilities, management commitment, and budget for the project.

These are some of the applications other universities are implementing.

  • Provide information to be used in a grant proposal
  • Administer grant proposals
  • Provide information on ethnicity statistics for a grant proposal
  • University finances
  • Human resources
  • Student demographics
  • Financial aid
  • Room and course scheduling
  • Data would be captured on the characteristics/demographics of students to better understand retention and success among minorities.

I’ve attached a bibliography that should help in your literature search. The articles on goals and objectives should answer your third question.
