I am a mechanical engineer graduate with three years of functional experience. I have received my diploma as a software tech with specialization in RDBMS. I have concurrently completed data warehousing courses (concepts, design methodology, OLAP) with MicroStrategy as the OLAP tool. Can you please advise me on the areas in which I should step toward becoming a data warehousing professional and the likelihood of further studies that I should undertake and the companies I should apply?
Sid Adelman's Answer: It's time to focus on some practical experience. Look for a position working either in a data warehouse software company or with an organization implementing a data warehouse. Look at the Web sites of the data warehouse software companies for job openings.
If you do decide on a company implementing a data warehouse, you need to reflect on what you can contribute to a data warehouse project. Since you are familiar with an access and analysis tool (Microstrategy), you may want to position yourself as the Access and Analysis member of the team. You would be most useful to a company implementing Microstrategy but do not rule out organizations with other access and analysis tools as the primary concepts are the same.
