BACKGROUND: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was founded by Danny Thomas in 1962. It's one of the world's premier centers for research and treatment of children's catastrophic diseases and cancers. St. Jude covers all costs above insurance reimbursements and total costs if patients are uninsured. Approximately 4,300 patients are seen yearly.
PLATFORMS: Data is loaded each night from an Oracle9i clinical research database to Microsoft SQL Server data marts.
PROBLEM SOLVED: St. Jude conducts clinical trials protocols requiring data, analyses and reporting from the initial collection of relevant data through final outcome measurement. Previously, protocol data managers gathered critical protocol data from many legacy systems and built and maintained personal spreadsheets in order to perform all the analyses required to measure and report on their protocol. Protocol data marts took approximately a month to create. There was little data collaboration across protocols, resulting in duplication of effort.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: We now experience dramatic cost savings in building data marts for new protocols. Our Hyperion solution reduced the cost to build a single data mart from as much as $40,000 to less than $4,000. Adding approximately 70 protocols each year results in estimated savings exceeding $1 million annually. It now takes days to build the initial protocol data mart. Database changes are instantly reflected in data marts and are immediately usable for analysis. Research teams now have quick access to the data they need. More than 100 protocol data managers perform reporting in a fraction of the time. Prior to this solution, one researcher spent 1.5 days preparing a data set for every request. By using prebuilt queries and the ability to refresh reports with a single mouse click, it now takes approximately half a day to perform the same function. Also, data managers and researchers now have on-demand capability to monitor, track and analyze their data in ways that previously were not possible.
STRENGTHS: Meta data integration and standardizations of data between the data warehouse and all protocol data marts enables data sharing across all protocols, standardized data definitions and easy changes to data marts and reports. Hyperion's unique ability to read meta data ensures data accuracy and greatly accelerates the time to deliver new data marts. Due to the confidential nature of the data and FDA HIPPA patient privacy regulations, data security is critical. Hyperion's row-level security and integration with database and Internet security models allows reports to meet the needs of multiple levels and types of users. Hyperion's zero-footprint clients require virtually no IT administration to deploy. Once users are granted access, they are able to get their own data and reports via their Web browser and have the ability to create new reports and modify existing reports to easily and quickly meet their protocol's reporting needs.
WEAKNESSES: Hyperion Performance Suite contains typical statistical analysis functions. For complex medical statistics, data is exported to specialized statistical packages.
SELECTION CRITERIA: The solution had to work with minimal technical resources. Other critical needs included leveraging meta data and allowing data managers flexibility in viewing and reporting on their protocol data. Hyperion Performance Suite was selected for its ability to access data with seamless meta data integration and virtually no technical administration. The solution worked against St. Jude data in minutes instead of the hours or days required by other evaluated solutions.
DELIVERABLES: Each protocol has a data manager or lead researcher responsible for all data collection and reporting for the protocol. The managers' role is to ensure data integrity and security, and to provide accurate timely data to the protocol team, internal review board, Department of Biostatistics and other regulatory agencies. With the new Hyperion solution, users are better equipped to meet the demands of their customers. In addition, they now have on-demand capability to monitor, track and analyze their data in ways that previously were not possible all of which greatly aids their ability to proactively and positively affect the treatment and cures of patients on their respective protocols or studies.
VENDOR SUPPORT: Hyperion's team from sales to technical support has been outstanding. We feel that our organization needs and solution success are important to Hyperion.
DOCUMENTATION: Because of Hyperion's ease of use, very little training was required for nearly 100 protocol data managers.
