Question: How would you keep three distribution center databases from growing into a very large database (VLDB), while giving the headquarters the ability to create an enterprise data warehouse (EDW) over the next two years if it is needed?
Chuck Kelley's Answer: I would build a "store and forward" type mechanism that would read the information out of each of the distribution center databases and hold that information until the EDW is built. The archive the data just as you do today to keep the databases at each of the distribution centers from becoming a VLDB. This is one of the promises of the EDW environment.
