BACKGROUND: Honeywell International is a diversified technology and manufacturing leader, serving customers worldwide with aerospace products and services; control technologies for buildings, homes and industry; automotive products; turbochargers; and specialty materials.

HARDWARE PLATFORMS: Intel-based servers with Microsoft Server 2003.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Honeywell uses SAP R/3 as our core ERP system. At the same time, we have 755 users who rely on Salesforce.com for sales, marketing and customer service information and interactions. Honeywell wanted a robust integration solution to drive nightly data updates from SAP to Salesforce.com so customer-facing employees have current, relevant and accurate information available. Using Pervasive Business Integrator, Honeywell has the advantage of Pervasive's R/3 connector to extract data from SAP for nightly automated uploads into Salesforce.com. We also use Pervasive Business Integrator to pull data from various Access databases for loading into Salesforce.com.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: We used the Pervasive Business Integrator GUI-based mapping to get the integration up and running in two days, with the help of a Pervasive professional services person. This was remarkably fast, given the complexity of our infrastructure and the SAP system. We also like the product's extensibility, allowing us to reuse maps and processes as we broaden Salesforce.com integration to additional R/3 data and, in the future, to additional applications such as our forecasting and pricing applications.

STRENGTHS: Pervasive Software always delivers thoughtful integration solutions. The software is simple but elegant. It moves a lot of data - just about everything one can imagine. Pervasive professional services people also really take on the challenge of an enterprise project. I was amazed at how fast they got us moving to online customer relationship management (CRM). A two-day ramp-up is impressive. Extensibility also is one of the advantages that led us to select Pervasive Business Integrator. If the vision was only R/3 batch integration, we might have done custom code or used Salesforce.com's API, but Honeywell wants to keep the big picture in mind.

WEAKNESSES: We changed a query to our Access database and then got an error message during the next data import attempt. When we put in a call to support, we learned that we needed to remap that data access point as a result of the query change, which is simple enough to do. A more detailed error message could have prompted us to remap without the need for a support call.

SELECTION CRITERIA: We wanted a simple, elegant solution to our SAP/Saleforce.com integration challenge. We saw a demo of Pervasive Business Integrator at Dreamforce, and the interface was simple and would be easy for a Salesforce.com administrator to learn. We could get fast integration without expensive consultants or a specialized new hire. We really liked the fact that Pervasive had an existing SAP R/3 connector; we didn't have to reinvent the wheel. We considered other products, but ultimately selected Pervasive for its usability, extensibility and because it delivered the best bang for the buck.

DELIVERABLES: The product provides nightly updates from SAP and Access source data to our Salesforce.com production application. We also plan to extend our integration to pull additional information from SAP and plan to use Pervasive to integrate with our Vendavo application as it rolls out across the enterprise.

VENDOR SUPPORT: The professional services and technical support resources from Pervasive have been thorough and really helped us ramp up productively and quickly. For example, when we hired new Salesforce.com administrators, Pervasive was able to show them how to integrate to the Access database in just 10 minutes. We've gotten prompt and professional support when we've needed technical assistance.

DOCUMENTATION: With the professional services support and product documentation, our team has been able to install the product, ramp up quickly and use Pervasive Business Integrator productively to meet our users' needs.
