Herbalife Ltd., a global company that sells nutrition, weight-management and personal care products through more than 2.3 million independent distributors in some 80 countries, has decided to host its global distributors’ Web sites on Microsoft’s cloud-based Windows Azure.

By building a Web site platform on Windows Azure, Herbalife can substantially reduce time to market, eliminate the need for significant capital investment and make it possible for the company to react to changing capacity demands in real time, according to Microsoft.

Herbalife goal is to give its distributors the opportunity to build customized retail experiences for shoppers.

The costs of supporting the creation of individual Web sites for distributors worldwide would have been massive if the company had taken on all the work, including licensing, obtaining hardware and constructing data centers. So Herbalife turned to the cloud to find a solution. Its distributors will launch a projected 100,000 retail Web sites within the first three years of deployment.

“Herbalife was able to use its existing Microsoft ASP.NET expertise and Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate tools to create the cloud-based Web site platform it wanted,” Doug Hauger, Microsoft’s general manager of Windows Azure, said in a statement.
